In 2004, 445 British Columbians tested positive for HIV.

New infections are also categorized by an indentified risk or activity. These categories are:

  • MSM (men who have sex with men, including men who self-identify as bi-sexual)
  • WSW (women who have sex with women)
  • IDU (injection drug user)
  • HET (heterosexual contact)
  • Blood/BP Recipient (blood/blood product recipient)
  • Occupational EXP (occupational exposure)
  • Perinatal (mother to child under the age of 18 months)
  • Other (includes endemic area immigrants, needle puncture, blood contact from biting or a fight etc, semen recipients, organ donors, non-injection drug use, and unspecified parental exposure)
  • Unknown (risk unknown)

Estimated total number of people living with HIV at the end of 2006: 39.5 million

Men: 37 million
Women: 17 million

Approximately 4.3 million people became infected with HIV in 2006. This is the equivalent of 11,780 new infections each day. Approximately 530,000 of these newly infected individuals were children.

In the same year, approximately 3 million people died of AIDS-related causes. 62.5% of the global total of HIV positive people live in Sub-Saharan Africa.
